Sara Wellman from the village of Coldwater in Mercer County has filed the suit against Dr. Joseph Mission and Dr. Paul Favorito as well as the Orthopedic Institute of Ohio and the Wellington Orthopedic & Sports Medicine of Cincinnati. Wellman claims that the catalog of medical errors that the two doctors were responsible for caused the cancer to spread to her lungs resulting in a higher amount of pain and suffering and medical bills than if the cancer was caught early.
Wellman first went to Dr Mission from Lima, Ohio in December 2009 complaining of pain and loss of movement in her left knee which she thought was a running injury. At the time Mission was working at the Sports Clinic at the Orthopedic Institute of Ohio.
Mission gave orders for an X-ray of Wellman’s knee to be taken. It revealed an abnormality in the bone which Mission raised concerns over. He ordered an MRI scan. But on the wrong knee. It was this medical error that would cost Wellman years of pain and suffering.
Mission treated Wellman’s left knee based on the MRI results of her right knee which showed that there was nothing wrong. Wellman then went to Cincinnati to study and while there and still in pain sought out the advice of another doctor, Favorito. Using the results from the previous MRI Favorito also provided the wrong treatment. Wellman would continue to go to Favorito for follow up checks but each time mistakes were made as the wrong knee’s MRI results were being consulted.
Finally Wellman went to a third doctor who spotted the mistake and sent Wellman to an oncologist who diagnosed cancer. The cancer was staged at stage III and had spread to her lungs. She had a large cancerous tumor which it was concluded had grown dramatically since her first visit indicating that the months of pain and permanent injuries were the result of late diagnosis. Wellman is suing for negligence and misdiagnosis and seeking damages to cover medical bills past and future and pain and suffering.
